Deepening Personal Relationships

We all need good relationships to get the most from ourselves and to lead a fulfilling life. When our relationships work well, we are more flexible, capable and resilient; and we are better to be with. When they don't, life can be a struggle.

From the very moment of birth we are in relationship with significant others who we depend on. Because we depend on them, we begin the process of editing ourselves and changing to "fit in". We lose parts of who we really are. Even in perfectly functioning families this happens! And we do this without knowing it.

The effect of these compromises surface when we realise that weナchoose similar partners; have the same issues regardless of who the other person is; canメt shake bad habits; don't handle conflict effectively; or feel unable to get what we really want in life. In fact, most life issues tend to revolve around the kinds or relationships we have.

The personality is almost entirely the product of interaction with significant other human beings.
